In the past, I’ve shared my complete and total love for fall because of outdoor activities , fall fashion, and vacation spots. One other huge component of fall for me though is the food. Haven’t you noticed that each season has a particular taste or flavor to it? I can’t be alone in this because already I’ve been spying some delicious looking recipes out there in the blogosphere.
While I am constantly trying to eat healthier and keep grocery shopping within the budget, I am positively itching to get in the kitchen and whip up some hearty fall dishes. Certain smells and spices just feel like fall and they are beckoning!
So, this weekend I plan on trying out all of these 3 recipes that taste like fall:
Pumpkin Chocolate-Chip Muffins
A million fall seasons ago (or slightly less than that), I worked at a lovely coffee shop that was known for selling homemade muffins provided by a local baker. Hands down the number one seller was the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffin. At that time, it was not found everywhere, and the baker didn’t even guarantee it each week. This was pre-Google too, so I had no idea how to recreate it at home. Perhaps it was the elusive nature of the recipe, or just the unbeatable combination of that muffin and a good cup of coffee, but I am forever inclined to associate fall with that flavor.
Flash forward to today, and imagine my surprise when I found that there is Paleo version of my favorite muffin. This Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins recipe from PaleOMG lets me eat like I did in college, without all the sugar. Yes, and thank you!
However, sometimes the non-paleo options are just calling my name and that’s when I use Trader Joe’s mix (it’s easy, it’s wonderful, don’t judge) or this one from All Recipes.
If there is one thing that blows my grocery budget in the fall it is apples. Oh, my gosh – the apples. I buy only organic because of the pesticides that are often associated with this delicious fruit.
I’ve read all about how terribly American apples are and I understand it, but I simply cannot deny the amazing taste that is a perfect apple. At one point, the grocery clerk at check out rang up my apples, double checked it and then asked me if I was sure I wanted them (because they were a stupidly huge expense). Of course, my answer was yes. Always my answer is yes because in the fall apples are the BEST and you can mix them with another fall favorite, cinnamon, and get the most wonderful pies in the world.
Smitten Kitchen has this yummy apple pie recipe and if you aren’t interested in making your own crust, just by a pre-made one and call it a day. I promise, no one will turn away your apple pie efforts. Because I am eating more paleo these days, here are 6 other options that not ever going to confused with apple pie but are temptingly good treats.
Chicken and Dumplings
I will go ahead and confess right now that I’ve not actually made my own version of chicken & dumplings in years. I’ve been lucky enough to have other, far better cooks create a chicken and dumplings meal for me every fall for a long time.
I think it’s a rather easy recipe to throw together though, and I’ll be trying this one from Eat At Home Cooks this go around. I can tell you that no matter how long I avoid carbs or clean up my eating, I will not go a single fall without eating chicken and dumplings. Really, why deny your self that kind of pleasure?
These are 3 recipes that taste like fall to me. Tell me, what are yours?
