10 Things You Need to Know before Hitting the Ski Slopes

by Ayse Gider January 21st, 2013

If you’re looking for a winter wonderland, the time is right to seek the slopes out. From Jackson Hole to Beaver Creek, as snow continues to hit the Appalachians and cover the Rockies, the mountains are calling. Ready to hit your favorite slopes, and carve some powder?  Then we’ve got some tips for you to keep in mind before hopping on the ski lift.

Plan in Advance or Get a Last Minute Deal

There are two great ways to plan a trip on a budget: buy tickets well in advance– or stay flexible and grab a getaway package. Either way, you can save money by bundling your airfare, car rental, and lodging. Find great deals on travel packages: click here

Dress for Success

If you’re not familiar with the potential snow has for finding every chink in your armor against the cold, then just take our word, it’s as bad as sand at finding and sticking to you! It’s also a good idea to wear layers as you experience extreme weather changes on any given day. Look great for less with coupons from Sun & Ski: click here

The Eyes Have It

Eyewear is a must on the mountaintop. The snow reflects sunlight surprisingly well, and if it’s snowing while you’re there, having a trusty pair of sunglasses or ski goggles will make a world of difference.

Odds & Ends: Sunscreen and Chapstick

It seems counterintuitive if you’re used to catching your rays at the beach, but the sun actually burns you more easily at higher altitudes. Lather on a good sunscreen and if you’re out West, bring a lip balm.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Being in the thin mountain air has a way of both dehydrating our bodies and fooling us into thinking that we’re fine. Bring bottled water and drink a little on the lift ride between runs.

Navigating with style on the Black Diamonds or sliding in spurts down a Blue, you will definitely work up an appetite. Bring a few snacks that are easy to carry, like protein bars, dried fruit and jerky. Your stomach will thank you!

Learn from a Pro so You Can Enjoy the Snow

Wary of the bunny slopes? Pros will point you in the right direction. Tips on technique and safety will help prevent injury. And, like riding a bike, you will remember some of what you learn for the rest of your life.

Get a Snow and Ski App

Check with your ski resort to see if they offer an app with real time weather alerts, air quality conditions and snow accumulation. Here a couple popular, national ones: for Apple and for Android

Avoid the Woods

It can be tempting to see where that little path in the woods leads off to, but it’s a high-risk gamble to explore any new trails on the slopes without an experienced guide.

Ski in Pairs or Groups

Form your own ski team or buddy system and have fun with it. Bring walkie-talkies, play games, and share the experience. It will keep you safe and provide lots of fodder for great stories by the fireside.

You don’t have to be a world-class skier to have a blast this winter. Just keep an eye on the weather, and each other, and make memories for a lifetime. Travel in style with great deals and gear up with coupons from our inventory of discounts!
